The title, “Ducatus Urbini Nova / et exacta descriptio. / MDCVI”, is located in the cartouche at the bottom towards left. It is an engraving of mm 485 X 380 published in “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum” of Abramo Ortelio, edition of 1608.
Among the 42 editions (1570–1612) of Ortelio’s work this of 1608 is the first in Italian and F. Pigafetta was the editor.
On the right, towards down, under the coat of arms of the Della Rovere, the inscription in the cartouche states: “Serenissimo et excell.mo / principi Francisco Mariae / I de Ruuere, Urbini Duci, / Ion. Babt. Vrintius antuarp. / aemulus rei geographiae / sacra devotione dedicat / obsequiulmq. / aeternum / deferì”.
The Almagià supposes that Vrintius has used as a model Clarici’s drawing.
The chart is oriented with the north at the top and its latitude (from 42° 42’ to 44° 5’) and longitude (from 34° 58’ to 37° 23’) sides are on the edges.
The scale located over the title is of 16 miles corresponding to mm 87. Accurate is the toponyms distribution, good are the idrography and the orography. The limits go from the river “ Seruo” (Savio) north west to the “Fiumigino” (Esino)’s one north east. In the Centre-South part the limits reach the high course of Tevere, Perugia and Assisi, therefore straying in Romagna Tuscany and Umbria.
The viability is marked in the chart by means of an outlining and it is clear how to avoid the pass of Scheggia in favour of Sigillo’s and the sites along the Burano up to Cagli are not touched.
According to the road indications of this chart at the beginning of the XVII century it was better to avoid the pass of Scheggia and all the sites up to Cantiano.
