The activity

The Action Training is part of ROME, a project directed at devising innovative management and communication models of the historical and archaeological heritage found along the ancient road network in the Cadses area. The objective of the initiative, which was aimed at a varied public, was to enhance the value of the sites by developing a network of cultural services, and to highlight the extant cultural affinities along ancient trade and communication routes. The goal of the action training was to develop a technical-scientific product for the representation and communication of a multidisciplinary experience. Queries on the object of the experience are thus enabled on all aspects of historical, archaeological, cultural and tourism significance. There were 13 participants, with specialization in their respective fields, coming from the Countries participating in the ROME project: Umbria Region, Marche Region, Puglia Region, Tecnopolis CSATA, Region of East Macedonia and Thrace, Municipality of Patras, and ECO PLUS – Regional Development Agency of Lower Austria GmbH. The workshop enabled participants to interact directly with disciplinary fields other from those in which they are specialized, as well as to address the issues that may arise in their mutual relationships. The fields of analysis for the generation of the expected results were History, Archaeology, Survey, Representation and Communication.

The action training took place in Fano, the Adriatic end of the Via Flaminia; it envisaged several excursions along the whole Marche stretch of the ancient Via Flaminia and at the sites of special historical-cultural interest. The work was divided into two phases:
• data collection and analysis, and
• data organization and communication.
In the first phase the work group was made up of building engineering, architecture, history and archaeology graduates whose assigned task was to perform a virtual reconstruction of the ancient route of the Via Flaminia by studying its historical context and the extant representative objects and signs along its Marche stretch.
The second phase aimed at result diffusion via different channels of communication for the diffusion of traditional and multimedia works and reports directed at a wide range of recipients, from historians of ancient Rome to tourists who wish to be guided to discover the signs of Roman history in the Marche. So the following themes were addressed:
• study and reconstruction of the history and the original route of the Via Flaminia;
• identification of the salient archaeological elements along the route (representative objects, walls, paving, funerary altars, bridges and viaducts);
• geometric and archaeological survey of some of the most significant representative objects using innovative tools and instruments (e.g. 3D Laser Scanner, Fast Photogrammetry)
• representation and production of popularizing material aimed at a broad public, in line with the interactive and multimedia nature of the field of study.
One particularly important feature of the experience was the interdisciplinary nature of the work performed by participants, which required a close cooperation of the historians and archaeologists with the more technical figures of the architects/engineers, web designers and web masters.
Thematic seminars were held during the action training for each phase of the work: 1. Design and realization of a GIS for an ancient Roman road, Dr Roberto Perna – University of Macerata 2. Fast survey: theory and applications, Prof. Gabriele Fangi - DARDUS – Polytechnic University of Marche 3. Critical analysis of the materials and interpretation, Dr Cristina Danielli 4. The communication of architecture, Prof. Paolo Clini - DARDUS - Polytechnic University of Marche 5. Analysis and historical reconstruction of Roman Fanum, Prof. Paolo Taus - DARDUS - Polytechnic University of Marche 6. Signs of the Roman civilization in the Marche, Prof. Valeria Purcaro –- University of Urbino.
