The goal of the e-learning modules about the Roman Routes, addressed to European high school students (14 - 18 years old), is to deepen the knowledge of the Roman history and civilization, to favour the interpretation ability of historical remains and handworks, in order to acquire the awareness of the common European identity and of its cultural heritage richness.
The e-learning modules about the Roman Routes are carried out both in English and Italian language. By using the "travel" metaphor, the students will be interested in understanding the importance of the roads, as media not only for the circulation of men and goods, but also of different ideas and cultures.
E-learning modules try to answer to questions concerning the ways of carrying out, the choice of the geographic paths and the possible uses of the routes at the Roman times.
The following e-learning modules discuss these subjects in a clear and simple way:
Roman road building, aiming at learning the importance and the attention with which the Romans built them: roads have represented one of the privileged fields of application for the innovative and advanced Roman building techniques and were carried out with the purpose of guaranteeing them a long duration.
Roman road network, aiming at deepening the knowledge about the historical and geographical development of this network. It intends to develop the awareness that, to carry out this knowledge, it is necessary to learn to look into the old sources (literary, epigraphic and cartographic) and to read the traces that, with the passing of time, were preserved and stratified in the landscape.
Journey in the Roman age, aiming at describing how the roads were used: by the armies that moved from a battleground to another, by the imperial officials and by the emperor himself for bureaucratic purposes, but also by private citizens, in order to move from a marketplace to another and to exchange the most various goods. A minor number of travellers were moved, instead, by mere amusement purposes: the pleasure to know and explore famous towns and religious destinations.
Each e-learning module has a specific introduction, where its didactic goals are explained, and is structured in more didactic units, each one containing an introduction, a set of lessons and one test to verify the learning level.
